Heart of the Watershed Party

September 18, 2006: On Sunday, October 1st from 3-6 pm, the
Willowell Foundation and the Lewis Creek Association invite the community to celebrate the natural and agricultural heritage of
the “heart” of the Lewis Creek watershed in Monkton, learn about
their programs, and eat a local harvest potluck meal to the tune of local musicians.

Lewis Creek and its tributaries run through the watershed towns of Bristol, Charlotte, Ferrisburgh, Hinesburg, Monkton, and Starksboro, and cross the boundary from Chittenden to Addison County. The Lewis Creek Association, a local non-profit, is dedicated to protecting, maintaining and restoring the ecological health of the watershed while promoting social vales that support sustainable community development in the Lewis Creek watershed region and Vermont.

Nestled at the heard of the watershed is Pond Brook, the southeastern boundary of an historic 230-acre land parcel now owned by the Willowell Foundation. The land features a variety of diverse ecological habitats, open farmland, and the historic Brown/Hoag family barn that was renovated this summer. The land is also home to the Willowell Foundation’s community garden, Walden Project alternative high school program, and the Center for Sustainability Program, which supports place-based education initiatives and curriculum for teachers in Addison County public schools.
    Schedule of events:
•    From 3pm to 6pm: a Willowell Foundation land-warming, Walden Project open house, and Lewis Creek Association annual meeting.
•    3-4 pm: Watershed and barn exploration with historic Monkton photograph exhibit.
•    4-6 pm: potluck and music with Pete and Karen Sutherland. Rain or shine, free and open to the public. Bring a local harvest dish to share!
•    Located on Stoney Meadow Lane, just south of Monkton Ridge on the Bristol-Monkton Road. Look for the old barn and silo on the east side of the road. Look for signs!
