Arts, Environment and Sustainability Institute
Summer 2006

Our first Arts, Environment and Sustainability Institute took place over 3 days in July 2006, at both the Willowell Land in Monkton and Middlebury College’s Kenyan Lounge in Middlebury. Our goal as facilitators was to create an initial support structure to help teacher-participants explore creative ways to support student learning through connections with local places and communities. Fifteen educators from three Addison County school districts participated in the Institute. As a result of this work, many educators set up new land visit programs and students from 6 different schools in 3 districts were exposed to the Willowell Land for the first time.

Learning with the Land: Place-Based Education in Addison County, Fall-Spring 06-07

This support structure was designed to meet the needs of a growing network of Addison County teachers who had already begun to explore creative ways of supporting students’ learning through connection with their community and with local places.  Specifically, this structure was a continuation and extension of work already begun to connect teachers and students to Willowell’s 230-acre parcel of land located in Monkton, Vermont.

Most members participated in Willowell’s 3-day Arts, Environment & Sustainability Institute in July 2006 held on the land in Monkton, had already conceptualized land-related projects they wanted to refine and implement during the 2006-07 school year, and had submitted “Land Use Proposals” to the Board of The Willowell Foundation for land access permission.

This experience was organized as a year-long series of workshops and an active network for Addison County educators who are collaboratively designing, implementing, and documenting place-based education (PBE)  projects using the Willowell land in Monkton for inspiration. It is part of a larger sustained dialogue exploring ways to use the local environment to enrich student understanding and to help them make connections with their K-12 educational experience.  It was also our intention to build our network capacity during the year in order to offer further Learning with the Land-related courses that utilize the skills and expertise of network teachers as mentors for additional Addison County teachers who want to become involved with PBE. Our 2007 Day on the Land is a continuation of this work.

For-Credit Participants
Participants in the Learning with the Land course have the option of structuring their network involvement as a 3-credit graduate course through CCV, which carries with it some additional requirements and expectations.
