midst of what are known as the “Western Fields.” The westernmost
part of the property, these fields are designated Agricultural Reserve by
the town of Monkton, which means that they cannot be developed and must be used for agricultural purposes. The Willowell Foundation plans to expand the Walden Community Garden into much of this area over the next 5-10 years. For the time being, the fields are hayed periodically. The soils here are incredibly fertile and rich.
Oldfield
Following the path down through the Western Fields, you will reach the Oldfield. Pasture succession has been allowed to progress and white pines, white cedars, juniper shrubs and berry bushes have flourished amidst the grasses, thistles and wildflowers. At the top of the Oldfield is the Orchard project, which includes eight apple trees, numerous berry bushes and two beehives.
